Listen to the Children:

Echoes from The Holocaust

• The fate of Children in The Holocaust:
the Saved, the Abused, the Lost

• The Separations – saying “good-bye”

• The Rescued and the Rescuers

Eligibility:

The Arts and Writing competition is open to students grades 8–12. Entries from students below grade eight and entries that do not meet the
other criteria and conditions stated in the brochure will not be considered for judging.


Criteria – Arts and Writing Competition:

All entries in the Arts and Writing Contest should focus on the theme of the “Listen to the Children: Echoes from the Holocaust” (above)
and how it relates to the Holocaust. Please be sure that students remain on theme. All work must be that of the student
artist/writer. Adult assistance must be limited to such things as preparatory teaching, providing resource material, suggesting revisions,
and editing works for technical errors. Each student and teacher must sign the entry form and attach it to the work. Please send or bring entries
to: Holocaust Resource Center, BOCES Building, 1050 Maryvale Drive, Cheektowaga, NY 14225.

Deadline: Must be received no later than Friday, April 11, 2008.


Awards:

Prizes will be awarded in both the art and writing categories:

• The Renée and Boris Joffe Awards:

• First prize for each grade, in each category, will be $75

• Second prize for each grade, in each category, will be $50

• Third prize for each grade, in each category, will be $25

• The Mary Deane Freeland Awards:
Two Best of Show Prizes will be given — one in writing and one in art. These are
collections of Holocaust-related books and videos, valued at $250 each, which will be given to the recipient’s school library.

• Prizes will be awarded at a special program in June, 2008.

Guidelines for Students and Teachers:

• All entries must be based on an informed understanding of the Holocaust (1933-45).

• Students will need to gather information on the theme and do research on the Holocaust. Resources are widely available.
Teachers and students should especially note the following websites:

The following may be helpful in focusing students:

• Beyond general Holocaust background, students should look into a wide variety of sources (individuals, places, organizations,
countries, etc. involved in the theme–eg. Kindertransport, Irena Sendler, Henrietta Szold, Oskar Schindler, Jan Korczak,
Chambord, Denmark, WWII Japanese Counsel...

• There are many books, films, documentaries available that tell these stories.

• Consistent with the theme, create a work:
- personal work of art (prose, poetry, visual art/video)
- cartoon, poster, photography, illustration
- interview, documentary

Arts Competition:

Create a work of art, consistent with the theme. Entries using the following media are eligible: painting, drawing, mixed media, sculpture,
photography, video. All entries should be mounted or matted and must be suitable for display or viewing (video entries should be limited
to four minutes viewing time). All art work must be signed by the student artist. A completed entry form must be attached to the back of
each work submitted.

Writing Competition:

Create a work of either prose or poetry, consistent with the theme. The work may be fiction or non-fiction writing, such as: journal entries,
editorials, letters, essays, short stories, vignettes, or anecdotes. All entries must be word-processed, using one side only of a single sheet
of white 81/2" x 11" paper and utilizing 1/2" margins. Each work must have a completed entry form attached to the back. Multiple entries
should be placed in a large envelope for delivery. More than one entry could be placed in a single envelope but please keep art and
writing entries in separate envelopes. Please do not fold entries.

Deadline: Must be received no later than Friday, April 11, 2008.
